Perhaps no other hat holds as much nostalgia and inspiration as the tightly-fitted silver sequin spun knitted cap that Carrie Bradshaw wore in the first Sex and the City movie.
Each year, in the doldrums of winter dullness, photos begin circulating of Carrie Bradshaw’s sequin hat. Fitted tightly around the top of her head, she styled the look with a lush oversize vintage fur, a long strand of pearls, a slim, vintage beaded bag in icy white, matching icy white leather gloves and ivory hued heeled boots. Underneath? What looks like a pajama-soft, silky peach fuzz hued top worn over a gray cashmere sweater and a pale blue wide pants covered in sea of baby florals. For Carrie, these are presumably sleepwear on steroids, but for anyone else, it would be a normal outfit. Still, Carrie Bradshaw’s sequin hat is clearly the defining moment.
The outfit itself speaks volumes about Carrie’s deliciously impractical sense of style. It has marks of the master herself, stylist Patricia Field, all over it. Just look at the gloves and the necklace. But that hat! It makes it slightly absurd, forever locking this look into the canon of greatest TV outfits of all time.
It feels right to bring sequin hats back into our colloquial dressing. It’s not a coincidence that sequin hats that look quite similar to Carrie Bradshaw’s are floating around right now. One particular favorite of mine is the Maison Margiela version (below), which, like Carrie’s, is designed to fit very tightly to the head, almost like a swim cap. This is important: it creates an alluringly odd 1920s off-kilter feel.
