Remembering Chanel Fall 2014 Jewelry and Bags

Who could forget Chanel Fall 2014 jewelry and bags? The candy wonderland of it all against the supermarket set was everything that made mid-2010s Chanel so distinctly Karl Lagerfeld and so aggressively interesting.

Especially when it came down to the incredible textural accessories. When Lagerfeld was at Chanel, he often transformed the Grand Palais in Paris into a fantastical set; and Chanel’s fall 2024 show may have been the best example. The entire venue was reimagined with no detail left undone. Think: thousands of supermarket household items like seltzer water, trash bags and even chainsaws (with Chanel chain links) all logo-ed up with Chanel branding.

Our dream necklace.

But back to the jewelry! A highly realistic Chanel candy necklace with a logo double C strung in-between the candy beads? Classic double flap bags wrapped in shiny, surreal plastic as if they were a styrofoam container of freshly packed ground beef? Wide bangles covered in a sea of supermarket essentials from strawberries to peppers and milk? All there. And don’t forget the milk-shaped Chanel logo bags.

The styling of the collection was a huge part of what made Chanel fall 2014’s jewelry and bags so excellent. Many of the models wore casual, toned down, glorified versions of workout clothes like leggings and athleisure (probably the mid-2010s biggest and most lasting trend of all time) done in epic tweeds or twisted on their head with unconventional tailoring. There were suits paired with bright colorblocked sneakers. An explosion of frilly ruffles earmarked formal dresses.

Cara Delevingne opened the show in a pair of hole-y leggings and a crop top, wearing a leather chain belt. Other models wore pearls piled high on top of turtlenecks with tweed sunglasses that matched the blindly bright colors. Massive patterned padlock necklaces were thrown over printed tops and chunky black quilted leather headphones were worn like necklaces. Streamers of tweed fabric strips and cotton camellias were strewn throughout the hair and neon eye shadow was painted in geometric shapes around the eyes.

“If you want to look really ridiculous, you go in stilettos in a supermarket,” Lagerfeld said of the show. “That’s exactly what I wanted to show.” It’s ironic given this is the same designer who once said “Sweatpants are a sign of defeat. You lost control of your life, so you bought some sweatpants,” but Lagerfeld had a very distinct way of speaking, often throwing out grand statements like these to shock.

One of the most amusing and genius pieces of jewelry from Chanel fall 2014 is the necklace and bracelet that encompasses the classic Chanel Gripoix glass and pearl logo medallion under vinyl, designed to look like grocery story plastic wrap. The edges are lined with knitted trim. These pieces–while not nearly as ubiquitous as the candy necklaces or padlocks–are incredibly hard to find. I recently picked up the bracelet for my collection. There’s simply nothing else like it.

The iconic bracelet!!! The models on the runway wore a matching set on each wrist.

The chunky tweed padlock necklace in delicious berry colors.

The candy necklace is so famous, it’s currently for sale at Sotheby’s. Or maybe you want the matching bracelet.

A literal interpretation of the Chanel supermarket collection in the form of this chunky cuff. There’s also a mini version currently on the market.
