What does the future of the silhouette look like? Is it skintight? Bulbous? Puffed? Curvy? That was a question Rei Kawakubo set out to answer with her most recent collection for Comme des Garcons, presented earlier this month in the Elysee music venue located in the Montmartre neighborhood of Paris. As models walked the pink runway wearing creations that mimicked dress forms and an exaggerated female form, futuristic music played in the background. Models wore Nike sneakers, created in collaboration with the brand. The models also walked out in groups of two or three and glanced back at each other over the shoulder, as if to communicate a secret message shared between the two. Others swirled around each another and shared stares–it was eerily beautiful.
Theoretically, it’s great timing for the designer to have such a conceptual show. Later this spring, the Met will open its Costume Institute show dedicated to her–the second living designer to ever have such an honor (Yves Saint Laurent was the first.)
As for what those pieces were made out of? Not even Vogue knows, but most have guessed it’s insulation, brown paper, Brillo or steel wool for the headpieces –humble materials that also make quite the statement about the future of the silhouette. Here, our favorite photos we took during the runway show.
