Possibly one of the most interesting collaborations of all time? The work of Elsa Schiaparelli and Salvador Dali. Schiaparelli (1890-1973), an Italian fashion designer, collaborated with Salvador Dali (1904-1989), taking a few of his artworks to literal terms.
I am one who regards the surrealist/futurist movement as one of the most profound enterprises of all time. The dough of an idea starts as a bland and wanton lump, but when other elements are added, other spices are combined, some kind of unmitigated, almighty bread comes forth. It’s the directness of the connections from art to fashion- fashion to art. Everything was looked at as an art. Everything had a superior concept behind it. The surrealists took perception and added a drop of psychology.
Of course, both artists were of eccentric nature. Dali, as you might know, tottered around the streets of Paris with a pet Ocelot. I wonder what he would have thought of Tiger King. Elsewhere, Elsa Schiaparelli tried to eat flowers as a child to become more beautiful. There’s no questioning the bounds of these two brilliant creatives’ minds.
Below, some of the most stunning collaborations cooked up by Schiaparelli and Dali.
