There are fabrics that look good during summer, and then there are fabrics that are made for summer. Gingham falls into the latter category.
In small checks, it has a decidedly edgy feel–larger gingham prints are the essence of prep, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Luckily, labels ranging from the totally, downright expected Ralph Lauren and Marc Jacobs to the more unexpected Miu Miu and Rochas are experimenting with the print on the runways.
For some, gingham may remind you of Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz. The character paired her red glitter ruby slippers with a homey blue and white gingham frock. Then again, style icons as far ranging as Brigitte Bardot and Marilyn Monroe have embraced the print in the form of chic, easy summer dresses and tiny menswear inspired button-downs. It’s not as evergreen as a print as you might think. Gingham makes a statement by appealing to a sense of girlishness and subversiveness along with an adult sense of transforming a supposedly domestic or young print into something new.
In fact, Bardot even got married in a pink and white gingham dress designed by Jacques Estérel. How’s that for breaking the style rules? Click through ahead to shop our favorite gingham pieces of the season.
