Girl Interrupted is the kind of movie you only need to watch once, years later, to remember for the rest of your life. The cerebral, moody film from 1999 stars Winona Ryder (Susanna) and Angelina Jolie (Lisa) in their prime as subjects in an infamous mental institution for troubled young women.
The plot itself is predictable as best, but the real reason why you should watch Girl Interrupted is for the style and fashion moments. Take, for example, Lisa’s shaggy long coat which looks exactly like a current season Saks Potts coat. Or, take a look at Susanna’s thin striped black and white tops and blazers, or little French cut collared blouses with her excellent pixie haircut. It’s all very modern Celine.
In the film, both Angelina Jolie and Winona Ryder sport very extreme beauty looks. The micro fringe bangs worn by Jolie feel very punk and very messy, exactly the kind of thing you might see someone proudly emerge from quarantine with–just so great.
Furthermore, the chunky belt buckles, baggy t-shirts, cardigans and crochet tank tops feel exactly like what everyone wants to wear right now.
The incredible Arianne Phillips designed the costumes for the film, and it’s no wonder everything came across as so memorable, being that Phillips herself has worked with Madonna, Quentin Tarantino, Tom Ford, Alessandro Michele, Miuccia Prada, Vogue Italia, Harper’s Bazaar and W among others.
