Every now and then, there’s a specific fashion item I lust for, that for whatever reason, I don’t give into. Maybe it’s the price. Maybe it’s the fact that I already bought too much stuff to fit into my suitcase. Or maybe it’s just because I didn’t realize how special the piece was, until I couldn’t stop thinking about it days, months, or even years later. These are the stories of these pieces that got away.
A few years ago while shopping the Gucci store in Paris, I saw one of the most magnificent creations: a white plexiglass bag covered in rhinestones with the massive, three-dimensional face of a white cat with large blue eyes. I was transfixed and thought it would make an amazing addition to my collection of cat themed clothes and accessories, but at the time, I didn’t feel like spending a few thousand dollars on this bag.
Fast forward nearly three years later, and I haven’t stopped thinking about the Gucci cat bag. Considering it’s more of an eccentric style and it doesn’t hold much, it’s doubtful Gucci produced many of them, and I’ve rarely seen them in-person. A simple Google search reveals a few listed on online resale sites, but all at prices that are pretty close to what the original retail value was.
The amazing thing about the Gucci cat bag is just how weird it is. It literally looks like something straight out of Alice in Wonderland, and it takes a formal little plexiglass clutch and turns it on its head with utter weirdness. You can also carry it clutch-style or use the chunky white chain that comes with it, and wear it as a crossbody. It’s definitely a conversation starter, even if you don’e like cats. That’s all to say, I want it, but I’m waiting to one day find it for a heavily discounted price.
The cat sports a pearl necklace and its blue eyes are hyper-realistic, always watching you. Would you wear the Gucci cat bag?
i bought this at the outlet in palm springs for 1200$! i was afraid to carry it because i would damage it. then i sold on ebay for $1600. i thought that was a good deal but now i wish i kept it 🙁
