I first saw a photo of a tube of Kailijumei’s lipsticks on Instagram. Which is why I was slightly shocked when a picture I posted on my own account (of only about 650 followers) garnered more “likes” that any other insta I’ve ever posted. I kind of thought everyone already knew about Kailijumei’s products–but judging from the amount of comments I’ve gotten asking where I purchased this lipstick, I guess I was wrong.
The Chinese brand stocks a range of transparent jelly lipsticks encased with gold leaf and real flowers, retailing between $35 and $40. There are also a selection of knock-offs on eBay for far less (some as low as a few dollars) but you can be the judge as to whether or not you trust using those on your lips. Each Kailijumei lipstick is clear with a different colored flower. On skin, the lipsticks impart color, but you just can’t tell how it will looks until it’s applied, since the product is considered color changing. I ordered the shade “Barbie Doll Powder,” which I would describe as a very subtle light pink. The color takes a moment to show up on skin. I’ve swatched the shade in the gallery above.
I consider myself a lipstick collector – and when I saw Kailijumei’s products I knew I had to add one to my makeup stash. I don’t think I’ll be using it, because it’s undoubtedly a beautiful object. Mostly, I think I’ll keep it around for photo opps and for showing off. Others have been comparing the lipstick to the rose from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.
Here’s a secret: the lipsticks sell out fast, but there’s a pre-order option. Don’t do the pre-order option. Instead, follow the brand on Instagram, as they release shades randomly and let fans know through Instagram. It takes a few weeks to ship to the U.S. once you order, but it’s better to at least know some semblance of when it’ll arrive rather than not knowing at all. You can order one here.
