Every now and then, there’s a specific fashion item I lust for, that for whatever reason, I don’t give into. Maybe it’s the price. Maybe it’s the fact that I already bought too much stuff to fit into my suitcase. Or maybe it’s just because I didn’t realize how special the piece was, until I couldn’t stop thinking about it days, months, or even years later. These are the stories of these pieces that got away.
Hands down, one of the most unique brands I look to for jewelry (and also perhaps one of the most unexpected, and under-the-radar) is Loewe. While the classic Puzzle bags and other seasonal options are what the mainstream gravitate towards, I prefer the wacky accessories such as cat-shaped leather necklaces. One thing that falls directly into that category? The Loewe Bat Necklace.
My personal Loewe collection ranges from the aforementioned cat necklaces to cat-shaped fabric bags, feather hoop earrings, plexi-glitter filled cat charms and the occasional elephant bag. And at one point in time, I also had the Loewe Bat Necklace. However, this is a different kind of One That Got Away story, because my Loewe Bat Necklace is unfortunately the only thing I’ve ever had stolen from me. (A long story for another time).
What makes the Loewe Bat Necklace so great is not just its amazing and outrageous shape–it literally doubles as a piece of sculptural art–but also for the fact that it’s quite rare. I found mine at the Loewe outlet just outside of New York City, and have been searching for it ever since mine was stolen a year or so again, only to turn up empty-handed. What makes it even worse is that I got the piece for an insanely good price.
Mastermind designer Jonathan Anderson really pushed the boundaries of jewelry design when he put the Loewe Bat Necklace on the runway for the Spring 2017 season. The Loewe Bat Necklace came rendered in inky black and pure white, on a thick leather double cord which was adjustable for length. The bat itself seemed to be made out of some kind of ceramic material and was massive–maybe 8 inches or so. Atop the bat sat a beautiful rounded ceramic object in blue, with orange, white and black tips.
Loewe Spring 2017 was a great season for accessories–there was a lot of crafty embellishment in the bags as well as cheeky motifs like clouds and playful text like “see u later” throughout.
However, the Loewe Bat Necklaces were really the standouts of the collection and will forever live in my mind as one of the most incredibly archive fashion pieces I once owned. If you ever happen to see the Loewe Bat Necklace for sale, you know where to find us.
