Loewe has been creating mesmerizingly magical collaborations with Studio Ghibli for the past two years. First with Totoro, then with Spirited Away, as part of a three year collaboration. As 2023 is now here, it’s time for Loewe and Studio Ghibli’s final collaboration. The theme? Beloved Howl’s Moving Castle! Loewe Howl’s Moving Castle collaboration will be available to shop on Feb. 2, 2023 online and in-stores, but you can also register to shop the collection early on Feb. 1, 2023 by registering on Loewe.com. We highly recommend this since these bags go fast.
So, what will the Loewe Howl’s Moving Castle collaboration look like? Judging from the first few preview photos, the collection will be one of the most colorful yet. The dog-like character Hin is shown emblazoned on baby blue leather. Wizard Howl’s face comes on a bag surrounded by peacock feathers. Calcifer, the much loved spirit fire flame appears to be covering a bright orange puzzle bag. Creative Director Jonathan Anderson is at the top of our lists of designers who bring fun, surrealistic imagery to fashion.
With Loewe’s Spirted Away collaboration, we got a taste of the immaculate embellishment the brand is capable of, with the Yubaba tote bag dotted with 3D rings. It looks like Loewe Howl’s Moving Castle collaboration will be pushing that concept even further, with crystals, feathers, beading and glitter. One close-up image appears to show Wizard Howl with a 3D dangling glass-like green and red earring. On another bag, Hin’s nose has glitter. 3D crystals surround Wizard Howl on another.
One thing we loved about the Spirited Away collaboration was the inclusion of quirky characters that were unexpected, like the duck at the bathhouse. Howl’s Moving Castle is one of Studio Ghibli’s most exciting and stylistically suited movies for a fashion collaboration because the characters have so much personality and eccentricity when it comes to how they were drawn. So far, it looks like mostly main characters will be on the bags for the Loewe Howl’s Moving Castle collaboration (and sweaters, scarfs, ready-to-wear, t-shirts and even candles if this collaboration is anything like the Spirited Away collection.) But how amazing would it be to see some of the lesser-focused characters included though? Like Sophie Hatter, Markl, or the Witch of Waste? Lettie, Grandma Sophie and Honey very much lend themselves to being fashion icons.
