Be careful, you have no idea how important your facial expression is. Qui etes-vous, Polly Maggoo? A line once said in the a must-watch French film by William Klein.
Polly Maggoo, a french model is followed by a camera for a french television show in search of finding out who she is. The film becomes more and more bizarre, terrifically surrealistic, and jarring as time goes on. Polly is seen flying over roof tops with an unidentified prince, dancing and singing about animal crackers, and as a young girl screaming and tap dancing. Definitely a must see.
By all terms, this is a pretty obscure film. But perhaps iconic in certain circles. Fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier opened his last ever fashion show in January 2020 with a scene from Qui etes-vous, Polly Maggoo? Interestingly, the director, William Klein, is an American-born French man most well-known for his black and white photos of city life and fashion editorials. Most of his film work was primarily documentaries.
Who are you, Polly Maggoo? The perfect film to watch during a time of self-isolation, it will make you question your own relationship to yourself.
