This is our unfiltered review of Gisou’s Hair Oil, plus a few other signature products from the line!
I first saw Gisou in Galeries Lafayette Paris, in 2019. When I first spotted the brand, I was immediately intrigued by its packaging. It’s super luxurious and chic. During that time, I was in Paris for my 4x a year trip for fashion week and busy working (I stopped by to do an interview in the cafe). I didn’t have time to actually try the brand, but I remember making a note of it on my phone as something I wanted to check out. Fast forward to summer 2020, and Gisou has officially launched at Sephora in the U.S. So, I knew I finally had to test out the products and review Gisou’s signature Hair Oil.
Let’s start with the brand. It was founded by the gorgeous Negin Mirsalehi, who is an influencer. She put together the entire hair line based on ingredients from her family’s bee garden. Bee keeping has been in her family for six generations, and some of her fondest childhood memories took place in her family’s bee garden. She also grew up eating the honey as a treat and also using it as a form of medicine, for sore throats and whatnot. When her mother was training to become a hairdresser, she also realized that her family’s honey might just be a little secret for amazing hair. Gisou herself previously used the homemade oil from the honey on the ends of her hair as an overnight treatment, and also added it to hair masks.
And so, the line was born. Put simply, Gisou is a honey based hair line, with “Mirsalehi” honey as the main ingredient, which helps to rebuild and repair hair.
The most well-know, signature item of Gisou is the Gisou hair oil, which is made up of the Mirsalehi Honey, Almond Oil, Coconut Oil. It comes in a beautiful box, and the product itself sits in a pretty, heavyweight glass bottle with a nicely designed logo. It’s exactly the kind of product you’d want to keep on your nightstand, vanity or a pretty glass tray for display.
Designed as a multi-use product, Gisou Hair Oil also contains fortifying vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, and is free from sulfates and parabens. The oil also contains Almond Oil and Coconut Oil.
I tried it on my very damaged hair, and I can see a real difference. I constantly bleach my hair and change the color (I’ve had literally every single color). But lately, for the past few months, I’d been feeling like my hair looked so damaged I didn’t even want to wear it down–at least not without curling it to try to hide the mess. Maybe it’s because of the fact that there’s a pandemic, and I haven’t been able to get a haircut, and I’m too lazy to cut my own hair, but my ends had been looking very tangled, fried and even thinner than usual. Since I started using Gisou’s Hair Oil, however, I swear that the ends look thicker, more nourished and less mangled. I actually feel comfortable wearing my hair down again. I put on two full droppers each night as and overnight treatment.
What I also love about the Gisou Hair Oil is that it’s a thicker consistency. I’ve tried hair oils in the past, but the result always feels very greasy and slippery without actually absorbing. You can also use the product as a pre-styler, finishing treatment, or in addition to your own hair mask. For now, I’ll be using it every night to see how it continues to improve my hair health.
I also tried the Gisou Hair Mask and the Gisou Heat Protecting Spray. The mask is incredible and I highly reccommend it. At 8.5 ounces, you also get a lot of product for your money spent. It’s incredibly rich and a little goes a long way. I’m a big fan of using a mask/deep conditioner everytime I wash (with bleached hair, you kind of have to), and this will be my new go-to. You can use a lot less than most masks (I usually use Kerstase) and the packaging is also gorgeous. I found it reduced my tangles and left hair soft and shiny, even when air-dried.
As for the Gisou Heat Protecting Spray, I only used it once since I’ve been trying to go as heat-free as possible this summer. What I can say, is that it’s really lightweight and non-sticky!
It’s not often I switch up hair products, in fact, that’s my least experimental category (except for color). But I think I’m crowning Gisou my new favorite hair care brand!
