You may know Salvador Dali as an artist, surrealist, film maker and eccentric, but did you know Dali also dabbled in perfume and makeup? As fantasy-drenched as his atmospheric paintings, Dali went all out when it came to packaging, color and even the shape of lipstick tubes.
So inspiring were his simple, yet incredibly different, lipstick tubes, that a certain A-list makeup artist took a little more than inspiration from the tube. Picture this: a gorgeous silver bullet with a golden sculpted lip in the center. While Pat McGrath may have changed up the tube’s color (black), the connection is undeniable. Most of these creations were popular in the 1980s. Dali died in 1989, but we all know he was a big fan of collaborations, which is what his makeup and perfume products essentially are – as they’re the result of licensing. Other compacts came in the shape of deliciously black, inky lips.
Aside from color cosmetics and makeup, Salvador Dali also loved indulging in fragrance. A Dali perfume bottle perfectly intact is a rare find, and the silhouettes are exquisitely beautiful. Brilliant golden suns sit atop shining glass bottles and slender noses made of green glass housed intoxicating scents. While Salvador Dali makeup is much harder to come by, there’s an abundance of Dali perfume on eBay.
