New York City summers are ridiculously hot. There’s no other way of putting it. Something about the steam bath subways and dirty concrete streets makes the heat a hundred times hotter. That being said, the weather also imposes a major challenge to anyone’s wardrobe. There are some days where wearing a tank top and denim cut-offs just doesn’t cut it. Our solution?
Sheer fabrics. The whimsy and elegance they provide is unparalleled. And despite what you may think, there’s a million different ways to wear them. A pastel mint green skirt conveys a instant dose of girlishness, while a dress with sheer black panels is equal parts mysterious and summer goth.
One of the designers who does sheer best lately just happens to be British-born Molly Goddard. Her work is incredible. Her taffeta pieces are the stuff of fairy girl dreams – both wearable and unusual. And, if I had the money, I’d buy them all.
However, I’m also a firm believer that you don’t have to spend a lot to look great. I own two sheer pieces I love dearly, that I’m still trying to figure out how to wear. One of them is a lilac Miu Miu sheer tank top, that has a texture that makes it look like it’s knitted. I bought it at the outlet for $30. Another one is a sheer bubblegum pink tunic with ruffles, which I bought from my favorite thrift store for $15. Below, peruse some chic sheer pieces to shop now.
