Say it with us: The British Society for the Advancement of the Miniskirt. This aptly titled forward-thinking group was indeed a real thing that actually existed.
In the early 1960s, the mini-skirt came, the mini-skirt tried to leave and the mini-skirt survived. Long ago during the reign of the swinging ’60s, a group of young women protested against Christian Dior’s new below-the-knee creations outside of Dior’s fashion house. The protest coincided with Dior’s showing of the 1966 Autumn/Winter Collection–as guests, editors, buyers and more walked into the venue, the protesters held signs in support of short skirts.
The young women titled their group, The British Society for the Advancement of the Miniskirt.
And they say protests and activism is a new thing in fashion.
